01
Start with an area-by-area specification
An underwater hull, a weather deck and a ballast tank do not face the same exposure. Separate immersed antifouling from atmospheric finishes, and define corrosion protection, wear resistance and cargo contact for each space. Shop primer and block-stage coatings also need to fit the later coating sequence.
02
Build preparation into the yard schedule
Welds, edges, cut-outs and difficult-to-reach stiffeners deserve attention before coating begins. Agree the surface preparation, stripe-coating sequence and inspection points with the yard. Work completed at block stage must allow for erection damage, welding and the repair of transport marks.
03
Keep the specified system together
Coat thickness, overcoating intervals and curing conditions belong to the selected system—not just the product name. For spaces subject to statutory or class requirements, check that the specified product, system and application procedure fall within the applicable approval. Retain batch details and coating records for future maintenance.
